The Mounjaro KwikPen 2.5 mg/0.6 mL is a multiple-dose, pre-filled pen containing the active ingredient tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection used to manage blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes and for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or who are overweight with a weight-related condition, as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Key Features and Description
Active Ingredient: Tirzepatide (2.5 mg per 0.6 mL dose).
Formulation: A clear, colorless to slightly yellow solution for injection.
Device Type: Multi-dose pre-filled KwikPen, designed for a single patient’s use. Each pen contains 4 fixed, full doses intended to last one month (one injection per week).
Administration: Administered once weekly as a subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Injection sites should be rotated with each dose.
Mechanism of ActionTirzepatide works by mimicking two natural gut hormones, GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This dual action helps to:
Stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar levels are high.
Reduce the amount of sugar produced by the liver.
Slow down how quickly food leaves the stomach, which helps a person feel full for longer and eat less.
Uses
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Used alone (if metformin is not tolerated) or with other diabetes medications, along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control.
Weight Management: Used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults who are obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related condition.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe OSA in adults with obesity.
Important Safety Information
Contraindications: Do not use if you have a personal or family history of a specific type of thyroid cancer (medullary thyroid carcinoma or MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Common Side Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain are the most frequent side effects, typically mild to moderate and decreasing over time.
Storage: Store unused pens in the refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. The pen can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C/86°F) for a maximum of 30 days.
